Read articles, instructions and correspondence in other languages. VoxyFlow helps you understand a word or passage as you read.
Select a phrase and translate it
Select a word, sentence or paragraph and press Alt + Shift + V. The translation opens beside the text, ready to copy, listen to or save to your dictionary.
Hover over an unfamiliar word
Hold down the translation shortcut and move the pointer over words. The meaning appears beside the pointer, so you can check individual words and carry on reading.
Translate text in an editable field
In an email, form or other input field, select the text, right-click and choose “Translate with VoxyFlow”.
How to translate selected text
Connect one translation service and try it with a short phrase.
- Open VoxyFlow’s full settings, connect DeepL, OpenRouter or Ollama, and save your settings.
- Refresh the page, select a phrase and press Alt + Shift + V; on Mac, use Option + Shift + V.
- Choose the target language in the window that opens. In an editable field, right-click → “Translate with VoxyFlow”.
On Mac, use Option + Shift + V. You can change the translation shortcut in VoxyFlow settings.
Natural text-to-speech for the original and translation
Listen to an unfamiliar expression and connect its pronunciation with its spelling. Speech buttons are available for both the source text and translation.

How to enable natural text-to-speech
Use an OpenRouter voice model or voices from your browser and operating system.
- For AI speech, add your OpenRouter key under “API Credentials & Services” and click “Save”.
- Under “Speech Settings”, choose OpenRouter AI, a speech model and a voice. For system voices, choose “Local (Web Speech API)”.
- Adjust the playback speed and click the speech button beside the original or translation.
DeepL or an AI translator with a choice of models
Choose a translation method to suit your task. You can change the service and model in the extension settings.
DeepL for text translation
Use the DeepL API to translate words, sentences and passages. Add your own DeepL API key and choose your translation languages.
OpenRouter for cloud AI models
Connect AI translation models through a single OpenRouter account. Enter your API key and choose a model in VoxyFlow settings.
Ollama for local models
Run a model on your computer and translate through Ollama, including offline once you have set it up and downloaded the model. Enter your Ollama server address and the installed model name in VoxyFlow.
How to connect DeepL
You need your own DeepL API key to connect.
- Open your DeepL API account and copy the authentication key.
- In VoxyFlow settings, paste the key into the DeepL API field under “API Credentials & Services”.
- Under “Translation Engine”, choose DeepL API, click “Save”, then “Check DeepL”.
How to connect AI translation through OpenRouter
One API key connects your OpenRouter account; translation, chat and speech models are chosen separately.
- Create an API key in your OpenRouter account and paste it under “API Credentials & Services”.
- Under “Translation Engine”, choose OpenRouter AI and a translation model. You can add a model using its identifier from the OpenRouter catalogue.
- Click “Save”, check OpenRouter and translate a short phrase on the page.
How to connect a local Ollama model
Install Ollama, download a model and configure the connection in VoxyFlow.
- Install Ollama and download a translation model, such as translategemma:4b.
- Allow your extension to connect in OLLAMA_ORIGINS and restart Ollama. The guide includes commands for your operating system.
- In VoxyFlow, enter http://localhost:11434, choose Ollama for translation, enter the model name and click “Save”, then “Check Ollama”.
Choose your translation direction in the translation window. Available languages depend on the selected service or model. The VoxyFlow interface supports 28 languages.
AI chat with OpenRouter and Ollama in the sidebar
Need help with a difficult phrase? Insert the selected text into chat and ask for an explanation of the expression or grammar, or alternative translations.
Create separate conversations for different topics and return to them later. Chat stays in the sidebar beside the page you are reading.
How to start an AI conversation
Choose a separate chat model and add the text you want to explore to the conversation.
- Under “AI Chat Settings”, choose OpenRouter or Ollama, enter a chat model and click “Save”. Set the key or server address under “API Credentials & Services”.
- Open the VoxyFlow sidebar with Alt + Shift + D, or Option + Shift + D on Mac, and go to chat.
- Paste text manually or click “Insert selection”, add a question and click “Send”.
Translation history and a personal dictionary
Return to translated passages and collect words you want to remember. Flow history and the dictionary are available in the VoxyFlow panel.

Enable history logging to find previous translations alongside their source text.
A dictionary of words and phrases
Save useful expressions and add your own translations.
Export for revision
Download your dictionary as a CSV file to import into Anki, or copy the text to import into Quizlet.
How to save translations and expressions
History collects translations, while your dictionary stores the words and phrases you choose.
- Enable “Log translation Flow” in settings to save successful translations in history.
- Click the star in the translation window to add a word or phrase to your dictionary.
- Open the sidebar and find the entry in Flow, “Words” or “Phrases”. To save a whole sentence, select the whole sentence.

What is free and what you pay for
VoxyFlow is free for personal, non-commercial use. Cloud services connect through your own accounts:
- DeepL API: limits and charges depend on your DeepL API plan.
- OpenRouter: translation and chat are charged at the selected model’s rate; the service also offers free models. AI speech is charged at the voice model’s rate.
- Local Ollama: processing runs on your computer without charges for cloud API requests.
- Browser and OS voices: you do not need to connect a paid AI model to use them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose different models for translation and chat?
Yes. The translation service and AI chat provider are configured separately. For example, you can translate with DeepL and ask a local Ollama model questions about the text. Text-to-speech also has its own settings.
How do I change keyboard shortcuts?
Change the shortcuts for translation and opening settings in VoxyFlow. Set the command for opening the sidebar in your browser’s extension shortcut settings.
How do I save a sentence with its translation?
Select the whole sentence, translate it and add the result to your dictionary. Your selected text and its translation are saved.
Where are history, dictionary entries and chats stored?
In the extension profile in your browser. When you use DeepL or OpenRouter, text for translation, speech or chat is sent to the selected service. With a local Ollama connection, a model on your computer processes it.
